On Mar 13th and 14th, 2024, we went on a field trip to Nagano Prefecture with seven international students.
13 Mar
We took a chartered bus from Yokohama National University through Chuo Express and went all the way to Azumino, Nagano Prefecture!
Inspection Site ① Fureai Taiken Kan (=Experience Center) vif Hotaka (Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture) We tried to make Oyaki, a local dish from Nagano. We started by kneading flour to make dough, then stuffed it with ingredients such as nozawana greens, azuki beans, and dried daikon radish. Then baked and enjoyed eating them together. We heard some interesting stories from the shop staff, such as the fact that oyaki was originally a preserved food, and they were made by burying them in the ashes of the hearth.
Inspection Site ② Glass Experience Asobi-gokoro (=a playful spirit)(Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture) The group made their stamps. First, each student drew an original sketch, transferred it to the edge of the stamp glass, and then carved it into sand to create an original stamp.
Hotel: Hotel New Kotobuki We enjoyed the hot springs.
14 Mar
Inspection Site ③ The national treasure, Matsumoto Castle. (Matsumoto-City, Nagano Prefecture) We departed from the hotel, got off the bus in Matsumoto city and strolled around the city before heading to the national treasure, Matsumoto Castle. After a volunteer guide gave us an explanation about Matsumoto Castle in English, we climbed up the castle tower. The international students were fascinated by various features such as the stone drop and the sama* . At the base of the castle, they took pictures with a ninja cosplayer and thoroughly enjoyed Matsumoto Castle.
* The stone drop and the sama, both are ingenious tricks to attack the enemies who come to the castle
Inspection Site ④ Vineyards (Ikeda-Town, Kita-azumigun Nagano Prefecture) In the afternoon, we moved to Ikeda Town and visited a vineyard. As a part of regional solidarity, unused slope land is rented under the mediation of public administration, and grapes are grown there to utilize the land as a vineyard. Mr. Naoki Kamiyama, Special Associate Professor at Shinshu University, gave us a tour of the vineyards and explained the various challenges involved in cultivating grapes in English. The international students asked enthusiastic questions, and the event provided an opportunity for students from developing countries to learn knowledge that they can use in agricultural development and cooperation with local governments when they return to their home countries. On the way back, we visited the wasabi fields and Daio Wasabi Farm, where we bought some souvenirs, then took the Chuo Expressway back to Yokohama. The international students seemed to have a lot of fun, and it was a very meaningful field trip.
