江ノ島に行きました！（伝統と観光が共存する江の島を考察する）
Field trip to Enoshima, where tradition and tourism coexist

2025年12月25日、午後1時に小田急線片瀬江ノ島駅に集合し、小池名誉教授のご引率のもと、留学生の修士1年生の6名と研究生4名で江の島に校外学習に行きました。

江の島には古くから信仰の対象とされてきた江の島神社がありますが、江の島の入り口から神社へと続くレトロな商店街には、お土産や、飲食店、旅館などが建ち並び楽しめながら歩いていけます。また途中からはエスカーという国内初の屋外エスカレーターがあり、高低差46メートルを約5分で神社頂上に運んでくれます。エスカレーターのなかは、幻想的な海をテーマにした美しいプロジェクション映像があり、乗る人を圧倒させます。

江の島神社に続く岩屋洞窟は波の浸食によってできた洞窟です。第一岩屋と第二岩屋の二つの洞窟がありますが、無料の貸し出し蝋燭の燭台を手に歩いていくと、なかに大きな龍の置物があり手をたたくと龍が鳴くので、留学生がまさに伝統とテクノロジーの結合ですねと喜びました。

最後に訪れたシーキャンドルは高さ60メートルを誇る展望灯台。湘南の海を眼下に富士山や伊豆大島が望めました。

一行は約4時間の行程に満足し、駅にて解散しました。

On 25th December 2025, under the guidance of Professor Emeritus Koike, six first year Master’s international students, four research students went to Enoshima for a field trip. The group gathered at Odakyu Katase-Enoshima Station at 1:00 p.m.

In Enoshima there is Enoshima Shrine which has been a place of worship since ancient times. On the retro shopping street leading from the entrance of Enoshima to the shrine, we can walk while enjoying various souvenir shops, restaurants, inns, and other establishments.

Also, halfway up the shrine, there is the first outdoor escalator in Japan, Esker (the name of this escalator), which takes us up to the top the shrine in about 5 minutes, with a height difference of 46 meters. Inside the escalator, passengers are amazed by a fantastic ocean-themed projection video.

The Iwaya Cave, which leads to the Enoshima Shrine, was formed by wave erosion. There are two caves, the first and second caves, and when we walked in with a free candle in hand, we found a large dragon ornament. When we clap our hands, the dragon screams. The international students were delighted, saying that it was a perfect combination of tradition and technology.

The last place we visited was Sea Candle, a 60m-high observation lighthouse from which we could see Mount Fuji, Izu Oshima, and the Sea of Shonan. We were fully satisfied with the four-hour journey and dismissed at the station.
