Anti-nuclear movement in Japan. Research notes

The anti-nuclear movement in Japan after Pacific War has been very diverse, changing its nature and focus with time. From mid-50s, after the Fukuryumaru incident, it evolved from the anti-war, peace and anti-nuclear (hansen, heiwa, hankaku) movement focused on abolition of war and of nuclear weapons, through protests against construction of nuclear power plants, and lawsuits for damages related to it in the 70s, up to the anti-nuclear power plants (hangenpatsu) movement calling for abolition of nuclear power plants after Fukushima accident. In the process, the discourse, issue framing, organizational structure, mobilization strategies and repertoire of protests changed as well. The main features of the movement since March 11, as argued in the presentation, can be described as networking, specialization, and professionalization.
